In August 2026, Moldova launched a campaign promoting solid biofuels ahead of the heating season: consultations, seminars, and practical guides on selecting and operating boilers, aimed at both businesses and households. The piata-biomasa.md platform is active, providing data on suppliers and products.
The figures point to a mature market rather than a pilot stage. The public sector operates more than 300 solid-biomass boiler plants with a combined capacity of approximately 70 MW. According to estimates by the National Center for Sustainable Energy, they replace up to 20 million cubic metres of imported gas annually — around 2% of national consumption. The private sector adds thousands of small residential and commercial installations, served by around 45 domestic biofuel producers.
The context is energy vulnerability: the country is fully dependent on imported gas and petroleum products, and around three quarters of its electricity also comes from imports. Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu describes solid biofuel as a competitive alternative that reduces exposure to external prices.
Demand is also supported by social instruments. For the fourth consecutive year, the “Ajutor la contor” programme compensates vulnerable families for energy expenses from November to March, with compensation also covering solid fuels — firewood, coal, pellets, and briquettes. In the 2024–2025 season, 2.69 billion lei was allocated for this purpose, and more than 760,000 families received support.
What does this mean in practice?
Moldova is a rare market where demand for pellets is growing simultaneously in institutions and households, while the number of domestic producers is counted in dozens. For a supplier of ENplus-certified product, this means solvent demand amid weak domestic competition.
